With all of his talk about “change”, is it only me who senses the irony here? The “Revolutionary” advances he’s talking about are Artificial General Intelligence (“information technology”), genetic engineering / synthetic biology & designer babies (“biotechnology”), and too much in terms of nanotechnology to sound-byte like the others. The “other fields” he mentioned is almost certainly the other field he didn’t mention, cognitive sciences.

What he’s likely referring to is “convergence”, and unlike Bush (who once made a similar statement) I get the feeling he understands these things with a far greater degree of clarity. This ‘convergence’ is the unifying merger of these sciences into a vast paradigm shifting new form of science / technology. It’s the fusion of these sciences into one. It’s really hard to even describe. It’s hard enough trying to describe the key component nanotechnology. I think its impossible to even conceptualize the world of nano without watching the following short video presentation:

A 482 page document, titled Converging Technologies for Improving Human Performance, which is the outcome of a 2001 workshop by the National Science Foundation & Dept. of Commerce explains convergence this way:

The integration and synergy of the four technologies (nano-bio-info-cogno) originate from the nanoscale, where the building blocks of matter are established. This picture symbolizes the confluence of technologies that now offers the promise of improving human lives in many ways, and the realignment of traditional disciplinary boundaries that will be needed to realize this potential. New and more direct pathways towards human goals are envisioned in working habits, in economic activity, and in the humanities.

In the early decades of the twenty-first century, concentrated efforts can unify science based on unity in nature, thereby advancing the combination of nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology, and new humane technologies based in cognitive science. With proper attention to ethical issues and societal needs, converging technologies could determine a tremendous improvement in human abilities, societal outcomes, the nations productivity, and the quality of life. This is a broad, cross-cutting, emerging and timely opportunity of interest to individuals, society and humanity in the long term.

The phrase convergent technologies refers to the synergistic combination of four major NBIC (Nano-Bio-Info-Cogno) provinces of science and technology, each of which is currently progressing at a rapid rate: (a) nanoscience and nanotechnology; (b) biotechnology and biomedicine, including genetic engineering; (c) information technology, including advanced computing and communications; (d) cognitive science, including cognitive neuroscience.

In short, the idea is to create an entire new realm of science, and therefore ‘life’, by unifying these key technology paradigms into one new format. It’s not merely to propose creating new lifeforms via genetic engineering, but rather create cyborgs at the cellular scale. Meaning each cell is in itself a biological nanobot cyborg that is alone artificially intelligent, yet are also meant to function collectively in many cases. Then these are to serve a wide array of uses from neural brain implants to ubiquitous intelligent panels and components on NASA spaceships.

The document mentioned is in effect perhaps the ultimate Transhumanism manifesto in existence, and the list of federal agencies and their collaborators in just that 2002 NBIC document is exhaustive:

One notable name from that list is Newt Gingrich. Newt did a key keynote presentation, and in it he refers to our current era in time as the “Age of Transitions”:

We are starting to live through two patterns of change. The first is the enormous computer and communications revolution described above. The second, only now beginning to rise, is the combination of the nanotechnology-biology-information revolution. These two S curves will overlap. It is the overlapping period that we are just beginning to enter, and it is that period that I believe will be an Age of Transitions.

Focusing on computers and communications is only the first step toward understanding the Age of Transitions. While we are still in the early stages of the computer-communications pattern of change, we are already beginning to see a new, even more powerful pattern of change that will be built on a synergistic interaction between three different areas: the nano world, biology, and information.

The sciences have reached a watershed at which they must combine in order to advance most rapidly. The new renaissance must be based on a holistic view of science and technology that envisions new technical possibilities and focuses on people. The unification of science and technology can yield results over the next two decades on the basis of four key principles: material unity at the nanoscale, NBIC transforming tools, hierarchical systems, and improvement of human performance.

If anyone out there underestimates Newt Gingrich I highly recommend you read his lengthy contribution to that document. He goes on:

We are living through two tremendous patterns of scientific-technological change: an overlapping of a computer-communications revolution and a nanotechnology-biology-information revolution. Each alone would be powerful; combined, the two patterns guarantee that we will be in constant transition as one breakthrough or innovation follows another.

One last Newt quote:

Computing is a key element in this revolution.

And that brings us back to Obama, and his new friends at Google. Recent news has Obama popping up in my Google News Gadgets I normally use to monitor whenever Google or DARPA pop up in news articles with the term “artificial intelligence”. In particular interest is Obama’s alliance with Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google. It turns out that Eric not only endorsed Obama before his presidential victory, but he even went as far as to hit the campaign trail with him during the last month. See video here of Eric discussing his endorsement, and here where he was featured in Obama’s 30 minute infomercial. In the time since the election ended, he’s now one of Obama’s special economic advisers. Another Google name, in Obama’s transition team is Sonal Shah.

The Google-Obama alliance brings context to my assertions of Obama’s initial ‘revolutionary’ technologies statement when you consider the NASA-Google alliance which Google & NASA press releases described the partnership as being focused on “massively distributed computing” and “bio-info-nano convergence“.

Al Gore also comes to mind here considering he’s been on Google’s board of senior advisers since shortly after he “lost” the 2000 election when he also began his “Global Warming” ‘crusade’. Considering the above reasons alone I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if we soon hear of Gore becoming Obama’s new “Chief Technology Officer”.

While Obama has been somewhat sketchy about how he intends to deal with NASA funding matters, I think with my above elaborations his following quote on the subject gains new light:

“What direction do we take the space program in? Once we have a sense of what’s going to be most valuable for us in terms of gaining knowledge, then I think we’ll able to adjust the budget so that we’re going all out on what it is that we’ve decided to do.”

Back to Google, and that Converging Technologies doocument, I’d like to point out one more thing. In the same sense that Google’s cofounders want everybody to have Google enabled neural implants, the drafters of the NBIC document also envision what they call the “collective social system“.

For years, military researchers have been exploring how the seemingly-improbable realm of quantum mechanics could impact information technology — leading to faster, more powerful computers, next-gen radars and radios, and encryption that’s all-but-impossible to break. Now, the Pentagon’s blue-sky research arm is starting to look at how quantum mechanics might impact biology, as well.

Darpa’s Defense Sciences Office has announced a workshop to discuss “innovative research that will investigate the way that nature may be exploiting quantum mechanical effects in biological systems.” And of course, they need an acronym to do it. So get ready for “QuBE,” short for “Quantum Effects in Biological Environments.”

Scientists have recently discovered that quantum energy transfers allow plants and cynobacteria to convert sunlight into chemical energy nearly instantly, and with almost 100 percent efficiency. “As energy passes between molecules involved in photosynthesis, a newly observed ‘wavelike characteristic’ allows the energy to ‘simultaneously sample all the potential energy pathways and choose the most efficient one,'” our Wired Science co-bloggers observe. They liken it to the “sci-fi trope” in which “a digital consciousness” is split “into several ‘forks’ that simultaneously explore different courses of action before telling a central consciousness what to do.”

Info / Resource page for my 2007 film, as originally posted. DARPA has since merged their iXo ‘office’ with their IPTO office (IPTO deals with their cognitive AI projects).


Google Video

This was constructed almost entirely using government / military animations, videos, images and photos. The narrative is sourced from government quotes from start to finish. It is the “official version”, if you will, but in an unprecedented format.

It unveils the governments numerous and ongoing programs related to A.I., “NBIC”, the “Global Information Grid”, nanotechnology, biotechnology, autonomous drones, “naval sea-bases”, space weapons, weather modification… or more directly: domestic and global totalitarian technological domination. American Imperialism meets Artificial Intelligence.

The only debate is: what are we going to do to stop it? Time’s running out…

It mostly centers around DARPA materials, as they’re the fountainhead of all of this, but this is all a broad multi-agency effort. Some of the video content, like the “OS interface” of the video, was screen captured from the DARPA sites old iXo interactive flash presentation, from almost a year ago, but is now no longer available.

This was a somewhat of an impromptu project that I found myself sucked into last Thursday. I was dong my daily sorting and organizing thru my massive media drives, normal stuff trying to prepare for my monster video project, and stumbled across the DARPA site materials I captured last year around the time I did TWYS. I checked the DARPA site and sure enough they took it all down. I’ve been on this for the last week almost round the clock. I know it’s a bit out of context on the bigger video many have been waiting for, but my ability to do major editing and processing of that monster is virtually halted thanks to a money – computing combination crisis. I technically started this project long before the monster I’ve been working on, as well as some others.

Team develops DNA switch to interface living organisms with computers

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth, UK, have developed an electronic switch based on DNA – a world-first bio-nanotechnology breakthrough that provides the foundation for the interface between living organisms and the computer world.

The new technology is called a ‘nanoactuator’ or a molecular dynamo. The device is invisible to the naked eye – about one thousandth of a strand of human hair.

The DNA switch has been developed by British Molecular Biotechnology expert Dr Keith Firman at the University of Portsmouth working in collaboration with other European researchers.

Dr Firman and his international team have been awarded a €2 million European Commission grant to further develop this ground-breaking new technology.

But the DNA switch has immediate practical application in toxin detection, and could be used in a biodefence role as a biological sensor to detect airborne pathogens.

The future applications are also considerable, including molecular scale mechanical devices for interfacing to computer-controlled artificial limbs.

‘The possibilities are very exciting. The nanoactuator we have developed can be used as a communicator between the biological and silicon worlds,’ Dr Firman said.

‘I could see it providing an interface between muscle and external devices, but it has to be pointed out that such an application is still 20 or 30 years away.’

The molecular switch comprises of a strand of DNA anchored in a miniscule channel of a microchip, a magnetic bead, and a biological motor powered by the naturally occurring energy source found in living cells, adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

These elements working together create a dynamo effect which in turn generates electricity. The result is a device that emits electrical signals – signals that can be sent to a computer. The switch, therefore, links the biological world with the silicon world of electronic signals.

The nanoactuator has been patented by the University of Portsmouth, and a patent application for the basic concepts of biosensing is pending.

You really have to watch this film to get the full scope, but Ill try to point out some things in this blog. I have heard the news mention this issue in the past, but overall this is yet another issue that is typically blacklisted from proper presentation.

I do understand some of the reasoning involved here, but I still think the extremists are possibly  selfish in all new ways in human history, and the ones who aren’t are too biased to realize that combining their dream with the real world is a recipe for disaster. Sure many have dreamed of it, but now that dream is manifesting into a reality that could destroy civilization, and it still goes beyond just mere immortality.

People need to understand that these extremists not only want to extend their lifespan, but most actually want to be immortal, and that is their goal. Some transhumanists are actually just extreme health people, but the rest seem to be these all-out extremists who dont just want immortality, but also extreme AI, mind uploading and to become posthuman entities. Im still waiting for someone to give me a good reason why the risk of AI is worth it or even necessary. Transhumanists typically want it because they know it will rapidly accelerate their goals (meaning forget about Moore’s Law).

I must state that this is a very interesting issue, and I can see trying to live life healthfully and to our fullest, and maybe certain degrees of extension, but many these people are all out extremist fanatics. I like a lot of what they’re doing actually, but there has to be some point where we draw the line. They believe it is our destiny to become cyborgs, but is it also our destiny to nuke mankind off the face of the planet because we can? Their AI dream even brings all new meaning to the existence of our nukes.

Early on they show an elderly woman pushing a walker (probably for emotional effect). What they fail to mention is how long those adult diaper / cripple years will go on when they extend life to 200 years, meaning you might face hundreds of years of that stage of life. Maybe they’ll reverse Dr. Jack Kevorkian’s aging? Probably not, because they’ll surely be able to get keep us alive for a long time, but reversing the aging process altogether is really pushing it, and uncertain.

The extremists are personally deciding for all of humanity what the true meaning of everything is, and whats best for all. They have figured it all out. There surely isnt anything after we die, because they dont think so, therefore go ahead and risk the destruction of mankind because they want to live forever with their collective god controlling everything.

They compare cell phone diffusion to reassure us that the lower class (since they’re systematically wiping out the middle class) might rapidly get access to all of the greater gene / nano therapies and other technologies like bionic organs required for indefinite lifespans. There isn’t going to be a “magic bullet” to immortality, instead it will be a combination of things which greatly increases the odds that most people wont be able to afford real extension for a long time. However, certain nanomachines for brain augmentation is another story.

They claim there’s enough global food capaicity to support 60 billion people, but there’s no way this earth will last forever if everyone becomes immortal. Imagine if the entire world was developed and industrialized already. Look at the rate it’s being destroyed now. Imagine more people, and then more, and so on. Even if we get around petroleum driven automobiles there will be even more challenges like water itself. Do you really think the worlds elite want us all around forever? This technology may redefine the motives of those in power in all new ways. This really makes me wonder about these people calling for massive global population reduction and genocide. Surely they know about these coming technologies if they’re scientists who really know what’s going on?

An interesting twist to this issue is how Clinton was for immortality, but the President’s Council on Bioethics that oversee these issues seem to be verbally against the Immortality efforts. They typically speak against many of the extremism issues, but Im not convinced that theyre doing anything to stop the bigger research.

Why is Bush calling for nanotechnology and supercomputing spending? Hasn’t Moore’s Law remaining true for the past several decades been ample computer progress? Why aren’t they stopping DARPA’s “Biorevolution“, or their Strong AI & supercomputing that is so vital to their revolution? Why didn’t they limit spending on “Robust Intelligence” in the NSF’s Information and Intelligent Systems program? There’s even the NASA IA project.

Why was virtually every government agency, with the White House first on the list, involved in the NBIC workshop, which was the rally cry of the posthuman evolution revolution? Why was Charles H. Huettner there applauding the workshop on behalf of the White House? NBIC goes beyond mere nanotechnology ‘bots’, it’s about growing synthetic cybernetic organizisms from the molecular level, which is the ultimate key in their posthuman revolution.

Why have human embryos been cloned in the US under Bush? Why are mice being humanized with human stem cells? Bush may be shaking up the embryonic stem cell community, but all that’s doing is motivating them to find new and better sources.

It looks like Bush doesn’t mind “god building”, human-rat chimeras, cloning, rapid posthuman evolution or their technological “collective society” (Singularity) just as long as human embryotic stems cells from new sources aren’t being used (that’s really just the wedge issue they use to keep us simpletons ignorant about the bigger issues).

Mountain View, Calif. (June 4, 2008) – NASA and Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) today announced plans to develop a new high-technology campus at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif.

Under the terms of the 40-year agreement, Google will lease 42.2 acres of unimproved land in NASA Research Park at Ames to construct up to 1.2 million square feet of offices and research and development (R&D) facilities in a campus-style setting. Under the terms of the lease, Google will pay NASA an initial base rent of $3.66 million per year. This rate is based on appraisals establishing fair market value of the land. NASA will use the proceeds to cover the full cost of the lease and the balance for maintenance, capital revitalization, and improvements of the real property assets at Ames.

The 40-year lease provides for periodic escalations and adjustments of rent. Google may extend the lease for three 10-year terms. After that, NASA and Google may agree to extend the lease two additional 10-year terms. If all extensions are exercised, the lease term will be a total of 90 years. NASA will retain control over the project during its construction phase, including approving the design, issuing building permits, conducting inspections and monitoring construction.

Construction will proceed in three phases. The first phase is planned to begin by the end of September 2013, the second phase by 2018 and the third by 2022. While the majority of the development will consist of office and R&D space, Google also plans to construct company housing and amenities such as dining, sports, fitness, child care, conference and parking facilities for its employees, as well as recreation and parking facilities and infrastructure improvements for NASA’s use.

Today’s announcement is the latest in a series of collaborations dating back to September 2005, when NASA and Google announced plans to work together on a variety of technology-focused R&D activities. NASA and Google signed a memorandum of understanding that year, launching negotiations for this development in NASA Research Park. Located at Ames, NASA Research Park is a world-class, shared-use educational and research-and-development campus.

Since signing the memorandum of understanding in 2005, NASA and Google have begun collaboration on several joint projects. The Planetary Content project develops software that makes it easier for the science community to publish planetary data via the Internet. This project has already provided high-resolution lunar imagery and maps to the Google Moon™ program and resulted in the “NASA” layer in Google Earth.

Similarly, the Global Connection project enhances the “National Geographic” layer in Google Earth by embedding geo-referenced stories and images from around the world. The Disaster Response project develops prototype software tools to help improve first response to large-scale natural disasters.

It’s odd how all of the transhumanists, with all of the great ideas for “humanity”, forget who is building this: the government. That puts your faith in them, and this brain network system, which will surely be in place by the time the NBIC implants will be ready.
