GPS tracking is now being put into nearly every new vehicle. The Federal ITS Program’s Mission “is based on the fundamental principle of intelligent vehicles and intelligent infrastructure and the creation of an intelligent transportation system through integration with and between these two components.”

ITS is a centrally operated federal system that monitors and oversee all national “intelligent” intersections, as well as vehicle GPS tracking. Intelligent intersections include street cameras and sensors to control the flow of traffic. The system is operated by narrow artificial intelligence, and it’s likely that it’s being developed into DARPA‘s CTS system, as has been observed in the UK in recent years.

The Federal ITS Program Mission

“The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) ITS program is based on the fundamental principle of intelligent vehicles and intelligent infrastructure and the creation of an intelligent transportation system through integration with and between these two components. The Federal ITS program supports the overall advancement of ITS through investments in major initiatives, exploratory studies and a crosscutting core program. Increasingly, the Federal investments will be directed at targets of opportunity major initiatives that have the potential for significant payoff in improving safety, mobility and productivity. These targets of opportunity will include both the infrastructure and vehicles, and to the greatest extent possible will focus on the integration between vehicles and infrastructure, between modes of transportation and between jurisdictions. USDOT will use exploratory studies to examine other as yet unexamined or unsolved opportunities for applying ITS technologies to significant transportation problems. USDOT will also support a crosscutting core program architecture, standards, learning, evaluation, technical assistance, etc. that fosters the widespread deployment of ITS.
Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII)
the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration initiative will work toward deployment of advanced vehicle-vehicle and vehicle-infrastructure communications
The fundamental building blocks of the VII concept are coordinated deployments of communication technologies:
In all vehicles by the automotive industry, and o
n all major U.S. roadways by the transportation public sector.
