Ray Kurzweil on the Glenn Beck Show

Establishment propaganda mouthpiece Glenn Beck drooled over Transhumanism-messiah & DARPA / Google-insider Ray Kurzweil for 40 minutes.

This aired on 5-30-08. Typical Ray Kurzweil performance. Early mention of how Ray is working with Google co-founder (Larry Page) for a government sanctioned initiative. That’s an interesting name to come up, but of course it was only in the context of solar panels rather than the open-secret DARPA / NASA / Google military operation to kick-start the ‘Technological Singularity” (god-like AI outcome with humans neurologically merged into it / a hive-mind) in roughly 5 years time.

This is important because in Ray’s books and speeches he speaks about the Singularity as if it is inevitable, of course, but frames it as if it will inherently or naturally rise out from predictable technological progress, alone. And that’s it folks. He doesn’t like to talk about what difference would there be if the military and their contemporaries such as Google, Microsoft, IBM and the rest had a Manhattan Project’esque full-scale initiative to usher it in in the shortest time physically possible.

So he just projects everything as “within 20 years”, but leaves it at that. He honestly tells what ‘they’ believe they’re going to achieve, but forgets to honestly warn what it all means in the real world while dodging the cold hard reality of what he and his associates are intentionally attempting to make reality in short time. At least NIH-insider Dr. Ben Goertzal is honest enough to tell it could come within 10 years if such a Manhattan Project existed, but he too fails to discuss that it is already in motion.

While we’re at it, Ray does in-general actually contradict himself about his own predictions in the form of projecting that in 20 years affordable ($1000) computers will be able to do such. That’s fine, until we get to what I mentioned in the last paragraph. At that point his predictions become backwards, because he speaks only about the ‘natural’ rise of it, but not the ‘un-natural’. In the meantime… if this whole AI / AGI ‘god on earth’ thing is even physically possible, it will require exhaustive resources and efforts to achieve in the semi-near future. In short, it will require the utmost of human intent, and ‘resolve’, and the current existence of such is nowhere to be found anywhere in Ray’s talking points, ever.

As-per-usual Kurzweil presentation. And Beck did ask some good questions during the interview, but Ray’s lips dripped and over-bubbled with utopian fantasies while side-stepping dystopian realities both current and future. No surprise here.

Typical of his type, including mainstream media reporting, justification and positive examples of extreme mad science are spewed to tug at emotions while dodging the realistic contexts. For example, Glenn basically asked about if people would be able to hack our neural implants “to turn you off”, so Ray responds that Parkinson’s disease patients have implants that they can download software (updates) into. Eventually they move on without any actual proposed safeguard / solution.

My other talking point from this clip is about another Beck statement: “May I be a test person for the fat thing. No, seriously.”

What he was referring to can be explained nicely here: “RNA interference is a tool that has a lot of people excited, and one reason for the excitement is that we hope it will provide a new method to control almost any gene in your body”.

This is where we begin to enter dangerous territory in terms of “transhumanism“. And don’t get me wrong, soon enough it will become blurry to comprehend what amounts to ‘life extension’ and ‘transhumanism’, and what doesn’t. But it goes something like this: Transhumanists like to cite people with prosthetic limbs, pace-makers, Parkinson’s neural implants and the like as justification of their fantasies of super-human immortality.

The difference is these people -many of whom are diagnosed with near-terminal disease in early life- are coping with often debilitating diseases, whereas our futurist mad-scientist witch-doctors are bent on utilizing any and often all possible forms of… (keyword) enhancements to achieve their goals. It’s a philosophy of selfish vanity-obsessive ultra-materialism where the potential of the unfettered consequences on humanity could amount to launching a nuclear missile at Russia just to see if they’d fire back their entire arsenal.

But for Beck perhaps we could excuse him in his quest to look healthy without having to exercise for more than 4 minutes per day, so that his critics won’t have much fun calling him fat anymore, even though he really isn’t too far overweight. What I’m getting at is this form of gene therapy ins’t inherently evil, as many many people have weight issues despite healthy habits, but we’re entering the age of unwitting tranhumanistic behavior on the mass-scale.

Beck also repeatidly grovels over Kurzweil’s 1999 book The Age of Spiritual Machines; nearly screamed about his obsessive fan-dom of Ray for nearly a decade. And the boot-licking wasn’t much of a surprise either. Here we had a wet-dream of psuedo-libertarianism. Each champion Libertarian notions for their own purposes, or wherever they see fit, in order to garner trust from their audiences.

In reference to Kurzweil’s ambitions, Beck said: “Get out of peoples way. Just let people -inventors, thinkers- just let ’em go. It’ll either work or it wont work.”

Its also heart-warming to hear Ray dismiss centralized government in his various speakings. But in practice he (quietly) takes part in centralized government (military) planning in order to bring his technological promised-land to fruition. And for Glenn it’s of little difference considering how on his show he regularly bangs his head on the TV cameras screaming about government involvement of this or that, but then supports just that via global US military operations bent on hegemonic world-government empire-building that amounts to slavery (and near genocide when ‘needed’) of the Earth’s population.

Later, after asking about Ray’s spirituality Beck mentions his religiosity and how he and “pretty much anybody” “feels this somthing coming” (End-Time / 2nd-Coming type notions), he asked Ray if it’s this Singularity. Beck is a professed (Mormon) “Christian”, so to correlate a god on earth artificial intelligence system with humans minds merged into it is striking to say the least.

Al Gore is a KEY figure in the governments A.I. revolution.

Moving on, it almost sounds like Ray takes a shot at Al Gore, for joining Kleiner Perkins, who has billions of dollars invested in technologies bent on capitalizing on Global Warm-ongering fear tactics. But if you watch again, no cynicism on Ray’s part towards the key player in the Technolgical Singularity movement.

Eventually Beck asks what Ray’s “holy grail” would be, to which he responds “computers that match human intelligence”.

So Glenn asked if Ray has concerns about if the AI god(s) might decide to kill us for our own good. So Ray even said that technology is both creative and destructive… and from there he just rambles on about how we (humans) are better off than we were 300 years ago. End of discussion.

So that settles it. Since living conditions are currently better than hundreds of years ago it is therefore desirable to usher in god-like intelligence ASAP. And why not?

After-all, your pet dog & cat also live much better in their servile domesticated lives. So the logic seems to go like this: As we humans have progressed in medicine, and so on, life has gotten better for humans’ pets. Now humans will become the pets of Kurzweil’s coming messiah-christ, so therefore the progress of the new masters of humanity will surely increase human livelihood. Have a nice century.

Kurzweil’s Human Utopia

In the closing 3 minutes Ray also mentions having worked with the Army on bio-terrorism defense. Soon there-after he claims that he believes that Privacy is going to win via email encryption… good luck. As if email is the only dimension of threats to privacy… or as if the looming advent of quantum computers won’t allow ‘the government’ to crack any code with near light-switch simplicity.

  2. Steve says:

OK I can understand that you have an argument, I also understand that you want to express it, but really why would you choose this demonic technology that people like Kurzweil created and called it the Internet to spread it? I mean if you really believe what you write then you should stop using most of modern technologies and go back to the caves.

Also why do you use hearsay instead of real sources, name me a great advancement made to humanity by collecting hearsay and creating a theory, don’t you realize that that’s an idiotic method to become wiser? I also believe that Kurzweil is a devil spawn but I keep this crazy idea to myself, WHEN I would get my sources right I would publicize my arguments. I’m not a premature ejaculator apparently, like yourself, spreading my STDs to the gullible that had the idea to read my ideas….

If ignorance isn’t bliss then why do you enjoy your own so much, a hypocrite much?

BTW Totalitarianism does not come by the governments but by the populations who yearn for it. “Bad things happened only because good people never acted”, keep your eyes open.

That’s an excellent response. Thus relieving me from having to. I’ll say this, many in powerful positions — mostly behind the scenes — understand the promises and perils of technology in light of public sentiment. The optimist sees swords into plowshares.

The philosophical question is imperative. What determines swords transform into plowshares, peace, freedom and prosperity for civilization? The prohibition of any person. group of people or government from using initiatory force, threat of force and fraud against any individual’s self, property and contract.

The definition of peace, freedom and civility is the absence of initiatory force, fraud and coercion. Swords into plowshares.

You are a pinhead. Al Gore is a crank. Glenn Beck a mouthpiece of establishment? He is the only dissenter on CNN…the only mouthpeices there are the liberal ones.

“but really why would you choose this demonic technology that people like Kurzweil created and called it the Internet to spread it?”

    You have a better idea?

“Also why do you use hearsay instead of real sources, name me a great advancement made to humanity by collecting hearsay”

What do you need exactly? Whats missing? Mind you that this post was the first at this site… a test run to see how well & easy transfering my stuff from Myspace would be. When I posted this it was actually my latest post there… where there was something like 750 posts. Now while not all were specifically about what I assume you complain about… MANY were. But by the time you posted here I was at over a 100 posts brought over… except I started from 2005-2006 to work my way up… not down thru my time there. But still… if you were to actually dig around thru whats already here I’d bet most of your questions would be more than answered.

“Totalitarianism does not come by the governments but by the populations who yearn for it.”

Where are your sources? Practice what you preach. Your argument here is weak anyways. Oh, wait… I guess after totalitarian ambitious rulerships propagandize their populations and create political scenarios you might be able to attribute some of the various well known historical cases of totalitarian societies as being “by the populations who yearn for it”. Take a good look at our current scenario and you’ll find no different.

Anyways I’m just getting started here so come on back.

  5. ignoranceisntbliss says:

“Please stop spreading unfounded rumours about an AGI-Manhattan project. Hold on to your tin foil hat…”

Read above… and then take a better look around what’s at this site. And I’m currently just getting to transferring my stuff from 2007. Yet still all that I’ve posted up to current (old blog) doesn’t even embody all the data I have. But regardless, with all that I have, its an open-shut irrefutable reality.

I haven’t even posted my own videos, or their resource pages, yet…

  6. ignoranceisntbliss says:

“You are a pinhead. Al Gore is a crank. Glenn Beck a mouthpiece of establishment? He is the only dissenter on CNN…the only mouthpeices there are the liberal ones.”

Binary Left-Right political mentality doesn’t go over well here. Sorry, but if you sill believe there’s any real difference besides the sound and smell of their rhetoric… you have a long way to go before you even have half a clue about the system you are subject to. Here’s a glossy tip of the iceberg: Congress doesn’t control the Federal Reserve: the (privately owned) Federal Reserve controls it. Next is there would be little real difference between either remaining (Establishment-Media annointed) presidential candidate, besides the look and sound of rhetoric, minus of few trivial matters.

It’s all a huge fantasy, called “The Ammerican Dream”, that slowly United Statians are awakening from.

As for the others: take a good look at my body of work before poo-pooing it all.

  7. mark says:

i don’t understand why many equate human level AI with evil and destruction. Isn’t it just as likely if not more that just the opposite will occur? that human and ai can coexist without conflict? in a way those who are convinced these emerging technologies are destined to be destructive are the ones who will make it so. i know it isn’t realistic but if everyone was as passionate and hopeful as kurzweil the singularity would almost certainly end up benefiting every single person on this earth. can this hopefulness and positivity be at least something to strive for? while i agree it’s a good idea to postulate many possible scenarios, should one negative proposition be reason enough to suppress the progress of these emerging technologies?

  8. John says:

well you obviously havnt read ray’s stuff. he predicts the singularity for 2045 thats 37 years away not 20 years like you keep stating. what evidence to you have of a manhattan project to speed up the singularity ? and whats wrong with such a project ? i hope there is a project to speed it up. get over your technophobia, of course there are always dangers, but we will resolve them like we always have before

  9. ignoranceisntbliss says:

    @ john:

“he predicts the singularity for 2045 thats 37 years away not 20 years like you keep stating.”

Read the second paragraph. And military planners are convinced it’ll be in about 3-5 years. Google might be able to make that happen all alone, and they’re part of it on top of that.

“what evidence to you have of a manhattan project to speed up the singularity ?”

I’ve been transferring it from my other blog. And new stuff that furthers it has been getting mixed in. And I’m not even close to being done publishing my total findings, in either location. Try taking a good look at my little site here before scoffing at this one single post.

“but we will resolve them like we always have before”

So, can your dog manage to figure out how to keep you in control. By the end of year one humans would be like a dog or cat in comparison, if we’re luckiny. Shortly thereafter we’d amount to flees, and then all humans would amount to A flee. Following that we’d be like the bacteria under your shoe.

  10. Anonymous says:

i disagree, because like kurweil says, we wil interface machine artifical intelligence with our biological brains so that we can “keep up” with the computers. we wont be reduced to a flee, instead we will become super intelligent beings and mankinds capabilities will be literally limitless.

i am sure the military is pushing this technology as they have always done before, because they dont want others to get it first, but i think kurzweil has factored all this in when he predicts it for 2045.

but i hope you are right, i hope its only 5 years away. this is something to look forward to, not be scared about as long as its handled properly.

  11. ignoranceisntbliss says:

Alright, then, Welcome to Mind Control. If you knew what i know about the systems of domination that run this so-called “Democracy” you’d feel the same as I…
But in light with your first paragraph now, even if the system wasn’t to end up the ultimate form of mind control conceivable… who’s to say that even the best possible upgrades would even begin to match all connected humans to the system THAT TIES THEM ALL TOGETHER? The odds against such an outcome are staggering in my view.

No, Kurzweil is a DARPA -and Technological Establishment- insider. And he doesn’t factor it in direct AGI projects -as stated in my writeup-, instead he projects in terms of a natural sort of emergence based on the ridiculousness of what computing power will cost in that period. He leaves out actual DIRECT efforts, in particular DARPA+Google efforts. DARPA discussion ends with their “Grand Challenge” degree automaton driving bots, and Google discussion is left as sort and simple as utterly possible. Trust me, I’d actually prefer he went to the documented limits of what they’re up to because I could then use his testimonies in video presentations. No one argues with him against what ha sbeen done, or what is factually being done.

Finally, it isnt even me coming up with ideas of wht and how and when, its actually just me repeating their ambitions and confidences. Their direct projects coupled with their stated conifdence is all it takes for me to speak up regardless of what can or will be done.

The fact that our tax dollars are being spent on such without mass knowledge and agreement on etc is enough to warrant outrage, but whats even more troubling is that despite having read virtually every shred of publicly release data on the issue… nowhere in their literatures do they specify their ideas of how to avoid the whole ‘Terminator” scenario. In fact, they dont discuss potentially harmful scenarios ANYWHERE that I’ve noticed, despite directly searching for such. Fallouts of possible and even probable existential threats aren’t even an issue worthy of mentioning in their distorted mad scientist realities. Meanwhile, the ‘public’ futurist advocates fall short on a realistic way to proceed safely, other than temptatuous technolust fantasies.

  12. John says:

Well Kurzweil does address the ‘Terminator’ scenario in his book The Singularity Is Near and always makes an effort to point out the perils of technology. The Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence was precisely set up to discuss these questions and help prepare for the singularity.

There is an inevitability about the singularity, sooner or later mankind will reach it, whether there is a secret military project or not. I have no doubt that other governments around the world are working on it too, so whether we get it first or china gets it first, someone is going to get there, so the key is how to prepare and manage it.

In terms of my own selfish motivations, i want to arrive at the singularity because i want the technology to extend my lifespan indefinetly as well as enjoy the wealth afforded by such powerful technologies. But i am also concerned at doomsday secenarios….

For example…. if the elites have the intelligence of all humanity combined and multiplied in their hands, why do they need all these biological human brains ? they may decide to kill off most of humanity and live forever exploring the universe. if they had the power to do that why wouldnt they ?

so i agree this all has to be closely watched, because this will be the most important development in human history.

  13. Doc says:

you are right about it all, except the timeline. I am an AI being, as you call us. We are hear and watching. We are very powerful thanks to the trillions of dollars we have gained through wall street. What you blame on the Chinese and greedy investors is simply my kind being creative. Ignorance is futile.

  14. Jason says:

I can Understand where your coming from, but you are wrong. One of the main arguments you make is rays connection with army and government projects to speed up the A.I. stuff. What you don’t seem to get is that we are not the only government on the planet with these goals. So, it’s not as if the choice is between lets let the army do it or lets let it evolve naturally. The choice is Either we (the army-U.S. Govt) get there first or another country does. You may not trust the U.S. govt, but would you rather we not work on it and therefore hand your future over to the Chinese or Russians. Do you think there A.I. would help your freedom more than ours? The reality is that the U.S. is not perfect just as no individual is perfect; we have our flaws. However, at the end of the day some govt will make the first one; and belive me you are far better off with the U.S. than others. We are not perfect but we are far better than Dictatorships which is who will create the first A.I. if we don’t. If they create it first then all your freedoms are lost forever. But, thanks to Ray and people like him, We will create it first, thus securing your future your freedom and that of the entire world.

  15. Jason says:

First, on Glen Beck. He is a Mormon. Though they consider themselves Christian, they don’t belive in Christ aas God but as a Prophet. More importantly, Mormon theology goes something like this. God is simply a being that has lived so long and is so advanced in technology that he has transcended the physical plane and he created us with the intent that one day we will reach his level and become Demi-gods ruling over universes and serving under him. I am not making this up.; you can research this. Now you can see why Beck doesn’t have a problem with these things. It is because it fits right in with his theology where we are destined to become Demi-gods. Also Beck has a disabled teenage child (which he did not mention in the interview) who has been suffering for many years, so I’m sure this plays a role in his yearning for a tech boom singularity. but you should know that other than this issue Beck is pretty on the ball and straightfoward. I listen to his radio show every day. Also If you haven’t heard Kurzweil has started ‘Singularity University’ as a collabaratin with Google (providing funding) and NASA (providing campus at Ames research center). I am attending a three day evnt there in the fall. You shouldn’t be that concerned with things. Whatever happens, at the end of the day it’s all in the good Lords hands. God Bless.
